Close to 95% of beneficiaries overspend on Medicare by picking the wrong plan, says Dr. Katy Votava of Goodcare.com.

Now’s your once-a-year opportunity to save money on Medicare.

It’s the “Medicare Annual Enrollment Period” from October 15 to December 7 — your chance to review your Medicare choices and make changes for next year.

“This is the time of year when everyone on Medicare can reevaluate features of their contracts to see if they’re getting the best coverage at the best price for their Medicare Part C and D plans,” says Medicare expert Dr. Katy Votava of Goodcare.com.

According to Votava, an astonishing 95% of beneficiaries overspend on Medicare, because they purchase Medicare Part C (Advantage) and Part D (prescription drug) plans based on premiums instead of picking plans that meet their individual health care needs.

Votava offers several tips on selecting the right coverage.

She reminds users to check plans each year to make sure that medications, doctors, hospitals and other health care providers will be covered and at what price. Look for any changes in co-payments, co-insurance, deductibles and other plan features.

Need more help?

Free Medicare assistance is available from Medicare.gov, Eldercare.gov, and Shiptacenter.org, says Votava, but you had best contact them promptly as they risk becoming overwhelmed with service requests as open enrollment season progresses.

Feel free to contact our office, as well, for names of knowledgeable health insurance brokers who can assist you.
