A Little Place On The Beach? It Could Be Good For Your Mental Health

A view of water seems to give people a healthy mental boost.

Just in case you’ve been hankering for a little bitty condo on the beach or a second home in the Keys, there’s now a scientific explanation to justify the splurge.

It’s good for you.

Researchers at Michigan State University and the University of Canterbury in New Zealand have found that living with a view of the ocean was associated with improved mental health.

“There’s a sense of calm and wonder that comes from being by the water,” writes Colby Itkowitz for the Washington Post. “While the tourism industry and Florida snowbirds have known this forever, there’s now research to confirm” the health benefits.

Researchers don’t yet know why the ocean view has a therapeutic effect. One theory says that being around water gives our brains and our senses a rest from overstimulation, and studies have already shown that the color blue is overwhelming chosen as the favorite color of people around the world.
