Resolving to do better with your money in 2019? Here’s money maven Jill Schlesinger’s advice:
“If you don’t know how the cash is coming in and out of your household, it’s hard to make informed decisions about your financial life.”
We agree. A good starting point is understanding cash flows – what you’re making, what you’re spending, and what you’re saving. Need help? Jill suggests trying Intuit’s Mint app or the You Need A Budget service.
“Make sure that any professional you engage adheres to the fiduciary standard, where they put their clients’ interests first at all times.”
Absolutely. The mailbox and newspaper are full of ads for “free” seminars sponsored by people who make money selling you insurance and investment products, whether you need them or not. Don’t get taken advantage of by someone pushing their own agenda. Hire someone who works only for you and recommends what’s best for you. That’s what a fiduciary means.
