“Hurricanes love Florida in October,” say storm experts.
“Florida is still a big target in October,” Colorado State University hurricane expert Phil Klotzbach told the Palm Beach Post. “The odds for Texas and the Carolinas get lower, but Florida is still vulnerable.”
Going back to the mid-1800s, 11 major hurricanes have made landfall in Florida in October.
Remember Hurricanes Wilma, Matthew, and Michael?
Hurricane season runs all the way through November 30.
4 quick tips for hurricane season:
- Keep your homeowner’s insurance policy and contact numbers handy in case you need to make a claim (your flood policy as well if you have flood coverage). You may not be able to pull documents off your computer if there’s no electricity.
- Take photos of your home and your possessions to document what you have.
- It’s always good to have some cash on hand (small bills if possible) to pay for emergency repairs, like tree trimming. ATMs may not work or be accessible.
- And of course, fill up the tank and stock supplies. Gas and water seem to disappear the minute a storm is on the horizon.
